Baccarat card values and scoring
Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. These are just names — you don't play either hand, you bet on which one wins.
- Aces count 1; cards 2–9 count face value.
- 10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings count 0.
- Only the last digit of the total matters: 7 + 8 = 15, which scores 5.
The hand closer to 9 wins. A two-card total of 8 or 9 is a natural and ends the round immediately.
The third-card rules
The dealer (or software) follows a fixed table — you never choose to draw.
Player hand: draws a third card on 0–5, stands on 6–7.
Banker hand: if the Player stood, Banker draws on 0–5. If the Player drew, Banker follows this table:
| Banker total | Banker draws when Player's third card is… |
|---|---|
| 0, 1, 2 | Always draws |
| 3 | Anything except 8 |
| 4 | 2–7 |
| 5 | 4–7 |
| 6 | 6–7 |
| 7 | Stands |
You don't need to memorize this to play — but it explains why Banker wins slightly more often.
Banker vs Player vs Tie: the real odds
| Bet | Wins (8 decks) | Pays | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 45.86% | 0.95:1 (5% commission) | ≈1.06% |
| Player | 44.62% | 1:1 | ≈1.24% |
| Tie | 9.52% | 8:1 | ≈14.36% |
| Player/Banker Pair | ≈7.47% | 11:1 | ≈10.36% |
When a Tie happens, Banker and Player bets push (are returned). No-commission baccarat drops the 5% but pays only half when Banker wins with 6 — that lifts the Banker edge to about 1.46%. Always check which version your table runs.
Smart baccarat habits
- Skip the Tie and side bets. The 8:1 payout looks generous, but it costs you over 13 times more per peso than Banker.
- Ignore the scoreboards. Road maps (Big Road, Bead Plate) record history; they don't predict the next hand.
- Watch the pace. Speed baccarat deals a round every ~25 seconds — that's over 100 bets an hour. Low edge × high speed still drains a budget.
- Play live baccarat only on licensed sites. Check the brand with the OK Check first.
