Players, deck and dealing
Tongits uses one standard 52-card deck and exactly three players. The dealer receives 13 cards; the other two receive 12. Leftover cards form the face-down stock.
Points: Ace = 1, 2–10 = face value, Jack/Queen/King = 10. Low points are good — they win draws.
How a turn works
- Draw the top stock card, or take the top discard — but only if you can meld it right away.
- Meld (optional): expose a set (three or four of a kind) or a run (three or more in sequence, same suit).
- Sapaw (optional): add your cards to any meld already on the table, yours or an opponent's.
- Discard one card to finish.
The dealer opens the game by discarding without drawing.
Three ways to win a round
- Tongits: meld every card in your hand — instant win.
- Draw (laban): at the start of your turn, if you have an exposed meld and nobody has sapawed you since your last turn, you can call a draw. Everyone shows their hand; lowest points wins. Opponents with a meld may fight; those without must fold.
- Stock runs out: the lowest hand total wins.
Finish a round without any exposed meld and you're burned — you can't win that round.
Tongits strategy for beginners
- Shed face cards early. Kings and Queens at 10 points each sink you in a draw.
- Get one meld down fast. It protects you from being burned and unlocks the draw call.
- Read the discards. They show which ranks and suits your opponents don't need.
- Don't feed sapaw. Before discarding, check whether that card extends a meld on the table.
